Courage Courage, the quality needed to overcome difficulties or the ability of doing something when facing fears. Courage comes in different forms, actions, words and even thoughts. Definitely a fine element of a human character that one may want to possess. Expectedly, the world is abound with stories of people having done courageous acts. So much, to the extent that some of the more inspirational ones have made it to the ’big screen’. Alas, humans have been hearing and watching so much of the replete acts of courage that it becomes nothing new. As a result, people are taking it as just another form of entertainment, without realizing the meaning and moral of courage. Acts of courage are not being impose by age restrictions. Be it young kids, teenagers, adults plus even the aged, It is the mentality in the human brain that stimulates its ‘appearance‘. Happening worldly, it can even be seen through small little deeds. A young kid, who parents are workaholics, has little chance of mingling with them. Unlike a majority of families that would spend at least one day per week to understand their children. All these just happening around him, so its no surprise that the child would feel unloved and dejected. He had enough of the loneliness, therefore, decides to make an attempt to voice out his opinions. In the end, his parents realize their folly and made time for him. Or perhaps, a teenager who has ‘friends’ that smoke and consume abundance amount of alcohol everyday, with the occasional intake of drugs. One glance and you might postulate the teenager as good as dead. No future, nothing at all. Yet, something in him made him reject the dozens of cigarettes, bottles of alcohol and drugs offered to him. One day, finally after straightening out his thoughts, he decides to end the wrong doings his life. Plucking up courage, he manages to finally break away and start life anew. Even an old man, who gets bamboozle of his savings by people he calls ‘family’ can manage to survive. Starting from scratch, and finding new meanings in life. All these possible thanks to courage. Movies! Men of honor, for example, is a notable heart-stirring film that shows of immense courage by an African American working as a US navy diver. Against all odds and even discrimination, one of the biggest problem that occurred in that era and probably still exists, Carl Brashear gradually made it up in ranks. He wanted so much to be a Master Sergeant that he even made a decision to amputate his leg. Such fine acts of courage as well as a tinge of stubbornness shown by Carl. It is a pity though. When humans do not have the courage to face problems, they may choose to take an escapist and fatalistic approach to life, be it suicide or inflicting pain on themselves. It can happen on even the most phlegmatic individual as no one can prognosticate the setbacks that might occur. Courage, so many definitions of it to life, perplexing yet at the same time, simple. |
